Individuals who inspired Dr. Nina Simone:

MARIAN ANDERSON
first famous black female classical singer. as a classically-trained pianist, nina felt a connection with anderson as they both struggled with racism though revered for their musical genius.

MARIA CALLAS
great opera diva who sang an incredible variety of roles; from wagnerian to light coloratura; from high soprano to mezzo. but, like dr. simone, it wasn't just the range of roles she was capable of singing but how she personalized and interpreted them that made her significant. dr. simone often stated if she was to be compared to another singer, it had better be maria callas.

MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.
ultimate american civil rights activist. nina performed her song about dr. king's murder, why? the king of love is dead, after his death to a full house. the concert, known now as the martin luther king suite, was a solemn tribute to dr. king.

LORRAINE HANSBERRY
playwright and friend of dr. simone's. best known for her play, raisin in the sun. hansberry was the inspiration for nina's song, to be young, gifted & black.

LANGSTON HUGHES
poet, author, and close friend of dr. simone's. hughes penned the lyrics to backlash blues. wrote a tribute to nina that appeared as liner notes in one of her albums.

EXUMA THE OBEAH MAN
bahamian singer and song writer who promoted bahamian music throughout the world. nina covered three of exuma's songs, obeah woman, dambala and 22nd century.

MIRIAM MAKEBA
south african jazz singer and devoted friend of dr. simone's. in the 1960s, both women were involved in the liberation struggle to free south africa. upon dr. simone's death, makeba commented on nina's "support within the civil rights movement" and paid tribute to her as "a great artist, human being and sister."

WILLIAM WARING CUNEY
poet who was one of the second echelons of harlem's new negro movement. nina used cuneys poetry in no images as a source of inspiration for her song "images".

FRANK SINATRA
nina's favorite singer. dr. simone paid homage to her favorite singer by covering songs from his most individual and reflective albums: "for a while" from "watertown" (on "nina's back") and no less than three songs from "a man alone" on her album "a single woman." she always needed a man with a "frank sinatra touch."
